Not for Lack of Trying:
Why Talking with HAL Is Still Science Fiction

The simplest way for people to communicate with computers would be using English or some other natural language (remember HAL from 2001?).

This talk suggests some reasons why this is still only a vision, after over half a century of often brilliant efforts by some of the best minds in computer science, linguistics, psychology, philosophy and engineering.
