ILIT Faculty and Staff

The ILIT faculty members work jointly on theoretical, descriptive, tool development and implementation-oriented topics in both knowledge-based and other areas of natural language processing.

Steve Beales research interests span a variety of issues in syntactic and semantic analysis and synthesis of texts, control architectures for complex NLP processors and integration of large, multi-engine NLP applications.

Dr. Beale is Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering of UMBC.

Marge McShane is interested in computationally tractable description of language phenomena. Computational tractability means not only describing the actual syntax, lexical and compositional semantics, pragmatics and discourse phenomena in a language but also developing heuristics for detecting the corresponding meanings from text. and their subsequent formal representation. in automating knowledge resource acquisition.

Dr. McShane is Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering of UMBC.

Sergei Nirenburg continues to develop the theory of ontological semantics that brings together issues in describing knowledge of language and of the world, including the universe of discourse.

Dr. Nirenburg is Director of ILIT and Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering of UMBC.
