Sept. 2008 - Aug. 2009, "SGER: Advances in Difficult Aspects of Reference Resolution,"$98,196, NSF. Also, supplemental grant, REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates), $11,125. Total award for this project: $109,321. Develops methods to use a broad range of heuristics, including semantic ones, to resolve the demonstrative pronouns this/that and the pronoun it, all of which can be used to refer to objects and events (realized as NPs) or to propositions (realized as spans of text).

2006-2007. PI. GeoMatch Multilingual GNDB Prototype Project, $175,000, sponsored by the Department of Defense. Uses knowledge-based methods of natural language processing to (a) expand the GEOnet database of geographical names with multilingual and non-Latin variants and (b) enhance the robustness of the search functionality.

2007. Co-PI. Modality Annotation, $75,000, sponsored by the Department of Defense. Takes a semi-automated approach to modality annotation of a corpus of texts, using the OntoSem knowledge representation methods.

2004-present. Co-PI. Maryland Virtual Patient, a subcontract from the DoD's Operating Room of the Future program. Developing ontologically grounded simulations of a society of virtual patients along with an automatic tutor to assist students in diagnosing and treating those patients. $200,000 - $300,000 per year.
